THE Sawtell Scorpions have produced some crucial results in recent rounds.
As one of a number of teams fighting for a finals spot, the Scorpions have had some big matches in recent weeks.
And they have stood up when it counted most with vital wins against fellow finals contenders Kempsey Saints and Port United.
The Scorpions had a critical 1-0 win away from home against the Kempsey Saints in Round 18, before having a pivotal weekend against Port United.
The Scorpions had a 4-4 draw against Port United at home, before a vital and season-defining 2-1 win at United the next day.
The Scorpions currently sit in fifth spot on the ladder after their two wins and a draw in the last two rounds and are right in the thick of trying to secure a spot in this year’s finals series.
Ten points separates third and tenth on the ladder in what promises to be a fascinating final few rounds of the season.
Scorpions coach Joe Skrtic said getting results in recent games had been crucial if they were to secure a finals spot.
“We knew we needed to get maximum points if we want to make the top six,” he said.
“The double header against Port United last weekend was crucial for us, and to get four points against a quality side like Port was a great achievement.
“We have had crucial games and every game for us is a must win, as its so tight in that top six.”
The Scorpions face another tough challenge this weekend in fellow finals contender and fourth placed side Southern United, which Skrtic said was another big game if they were to make finals.
“It’s a tough challenge for us as they are a quality side, and it’s a crucial game for us if we want to play finals,” he said.
“If we show the winning hunger that we did against Port United then we are a good chance.”
