THE Sawtell Scorpions have been the big improvers so far in this years Coastal Premier League season.
The Scorpions have already won more games than they did last season in their first eight matches of 2022.
The Scorpions currently sit fourth on the ladder with 9 points after 3 wins, but will have to fight hard to keep their top four spot with other teams having games in hand.
The young Sawtell side are coming off a 3-2 win against Southern United in the dying stages, and now face a Port Saints side who sit just one point behind them on the ladder.
A year playing against more experienced players and teams had made the difference this season, according to Scorpions coach Joe Skrtic.
“I think we have gained more experience coming in from last year, and players being aware and knowing how hard it is,” he said.
“Just having a season of playing against a lot of experienced players and teams who have played together for years, and seeing how they control the pace of the game.
“We had a lot of 16- and 17-year old players who are now a year older, who now have more experience and are learning a lot more.”
The Scorpions coach said his side were playing with more composure this season.
“Last year we were full steam ahead and rushing, but now we a bit more composed and controlling the game, controlling the intensity and the pace of the game.”
“We’re starting to gel a lot better this year, and our combinations are starting to pay in the final third.”
