SAWTELL Scorpions are set to enter the new Coastal League One Women competition.

Scorpions coach Graham Shanahan has recent experience coaching Sawtell’s under 16s girls, with a number of his players making the step up to senior football in the new women’s competition.

“A lot of our under 16s finished juniors and are transitioning up to the seniors,” he said.

“We a very young team with a lot aged 17 or 18 to low 20’s.”

Shanahan said the new women’s competition had piqued the interest of a number of players to wear the green and white.

“Our numbers at training have been really good, we’ve had between 24 and 28 players, and we’ve attracted new players and players from other clubs,” he said.

“The new competition has definitely piqued their interest, and the problem I have now is picking the first XI.”

The Scorpions coach said his team looked to be competitive against other North Coast Football sides who had set the recent benchmark.

“The next challenge is stepping up to Boambee and Urunga, and with our starting XI I think we can challenge them,” he said.

“Sawtell really want to break into that top tier and break the dominance of Boambee and Urunga, and for the first few games we’ll be finding our feet but later in the season we will be a threat.”
