Port Saints – CPL preview

JOHN Goodman reckons he has the easiest job in the world.

The Port Saints coach admits he hasn’t had to do much this pre-season as Port Saints prepare for their second Coastal Premier League campaign.

Saints fell in the final round last season to hand over the Premiers Plate to Coffs City United, but the foundations have been laid for the club to go a step further.

Goodman is a self-confessed winner and anything less is considered a failure.

“Unfortunately I’m pretty competitive and if we don’t win I’m not happy,” he said.

“The boys know that and want to be competitive; we’re getting between 28 and 30 to training which is unheard of at this club over the years.”

Helping drive the culture is premiership-winning Wallis Lake striker Roan Whiteman who has returned for another season.

Throw in former Lambton Jaffas and Hamilton Olympic defender Grant Brown and you start to see where the confidence stems from.

“I’ve got players who have won at different levels and they expect nothing less of themselves,” Goodman said.

“That’s the beauty of the playing group. They expect to win whenever they go out on the field so I’ve got the easiest job in that respect, I don’t have to try hard at all.

“I’ve got five really top class senior players who run it, they don’t need me.”

The club’s depth across both grades means Goodman is confident they have the necessary cover for when the inevitable injury crisis rears its head.

“I’ve got 16 or 17 players where if we have players out [in first grade] I know they can come in and do a job,” he said.

“We usually have a good 12 or 13 maybe, but this year it’s gone deeper.

“I’m not saying we’re going to win it, the point is we want to win it just like Boambee and just like Coffs United.

“We’ll give everybody a run for their money this year for sure.”
