North preview: A grand final dress rehearsal?

Coffs City United Lions coach Glenn Williams says the key to his team’s run of success in 2020 is the result of adding two elements.

They have finally settled into the style of play he wants, which sees a level of confidence where they almost expect to win every game.

But they will face arguably their toughest test this weekend when they travel to Ayrshire Park to take on Boambee.

There is a strong recent history between the two sides with the Bombers claiming bragging rights in the more recent meetings.

“Boambee play a different brand of football, and they certainly lift when they play us,” Williams said.

“We had the wood on them for a reasonable amount of time, and now they’ve done it to us for the last two years.

“We lost to them in a grand final, and we lost to them in the FFA Cup so it will be nice to get one back on them.”

Williams acknowledged their success this season had been largely due to fielding one of the more talented midfield’s in the competition.

“Chris Dooley is outstanding every week and just does his job,” the coach said.

“He’s found a spot in the middle of the park where I used to play him up front where he wasn’t a natural striker, and Nick Mallet is probably one of the better players in the competition.”

The Bombers will go into the clash with a level of confidence having inflicted one of the Lions only two losses this season on July 25.

Coach Jon Fergusson was expecting the Lions to hold the majority of possession, but it was up to his side to remain compact at the back.

They have already done that this year.

“We’ve got the understanding that we’ve got the defensive capabilities to prevent them from scoring and then if we can do that we can get ourselves a result,” he said.

“You always get opportunities in football; it’s a matter of whether you get one or you get 20. It’s a matter of when they arise that you take them because they’ll definitely be there.”
